Meet “Bò Ghàidhealach fhada-fhaltach” which means long-haired Highland cow in Scottish Gaelic. We call him Bo. He is large, furry and awesome! It’s one of those painting a photograph just doesn’t due him justice.
"Bo" captures the personality of a Highland cow through energetic brushwork and a carefully chosen palette. The composition places the animal close to the viewer, letting its shaggy forelock, curved horn, and soulful eye dominate the frame. Warm golds and oranges sweep across the fur, while pockets of deep blue and teal create cool counterpoints that add depth and drama. The result is a portrait that feels both vivid and affectionate.
The painting balances playful immediacy with a sense of refinement: broad, painterly gestures suggest texture and volume, while smaller marks around the face preserve expression and character. The contrast between warm and cool tones was used intentionally to highlight the animal’s face and bring the viewer’s attention to its gaze.
